Atlanta Infertility Testing
Tests for Both Men & Women
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy
to term after one full year of regular, unprotected intercourse, if under
age 35, or after 6 months if age 35 or older. In the United States, approximately
10 - 15% of couples cope with infertility. The cause of the infertility
may be of female or male origin. As reported by the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC), the cause of infertility is purely male one third of the
time, purely female one third of the time, and the remaining cases are
the result of problems in both partners.
-
Male infertility testing starts with a semen analysis to establish if there is a male factor. Once
a sperm sample is collected, a lab technician will evaluate sperm count
as well as the appearance, shape, and motility (ability to move) of the
sperm. If the male partner’s semen analysis, medical history, and
physical exam are normal, the focus will shift towards the female partner.
-
Female infertility testing starts with simple evaluations such as the determination that ovulation
is occurring. Further evaluations would address the quality of the eggs
and whether other hormonal problems are interfering. If the initial ovulation,
egg, and anatomical evaluations, as well as, sperm testing reveal normal
results, further testing will ensue depending on your fertility doctor’s
recommendations.
