Breast Cancer & Fertility

With about 12% of women developing invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime, breast cancer is a disease that has affected the lives of millions.

While breast cancer is a fear in itself, patients also fear for their ability to conceive after completing their cancer treatments.

Unfortunately, common cancer treatments (such as radiation and chemotherapy) can have adverse effects on a woman's fertility. However, there is hope for conception, depending on the stage of cancer at hand.

Fertility Preservation in Atlanta

Egg Freezing

Egg freezing is an option available for women who are at risk of running out of eggs, prematurely, following cancer therapy. Through this process, unfertilized eggs are retrieved and frozen to save for a later date.

The process typically takes 2-4 weeks following an initial evaluation with one of our fertility specialists. During this time, the patient’s ovaries are stimulated with hormone shots to enhance egg production, then retrieved while a patient is under light anesthesia.

Embryo Freezing

Embryo freezing is an option typically chosen by couples who are in a long-term relationship. Through in vitro fertilization (IVF), we are able to retrieve the eggs and inseminate them with the partner’s (or donor’s) sperm — then freeze and store the embryos until the cancer is successfully in remission.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing

At Atlanta Center for Reproductive Medicine, we are committed to helping women impacted by cancer by preserving their fertility and family-building futures. Through our partnership with CCRM, we’re able to offer preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to ACRM patients.

Performed in conjunction with IVF, PGT helps screen embryos for hereditary cancer genes — thus helping to possibly break the cycle of cancer in a family.
